Magnetic dipolar atoms provide a rich platform for realizing and studying systems with long range anisotropic interactions as well as for investigating physical models with large spin. However, opportunities using ultraviolet light in dipolar atom experiments have so far been unexplored. In this talk, I will present our recent efforts in Stuttgart toward building a new generation dysprosium quantum gas machine that aims to enable studies of new states of matter, both in the bulk and with single site resolution using quantum gas microscopy with short wavelength ultraviolet (UV) lattices. Additionally, I will discuss the interesting properties of UV ground state transitions that exist in magnetic lanthanide atoms which provides ideal access to an ultra-long lived state that is conveniently magic across a wide wavelength range. I will present our measurements using two-dimensional shelving spectroscopy to characterize them and also highlight some advantages of using this technique to characterize complex spectra.
