Abstract:

One of the pillars of photonic quantum state engineering is spontaneous parametric down conversion. It is a nonlinear optical process in which a pump photon is spontaneously decayed into a photon pair. The photons participating in the process are required to satisfy momentum conservation. In bulk crystals, this condition, limits the versatility of the generated quantum state. The reduced light-matter interaction length offered with ultrathin nonlinear films, leads to a large momentum uncertainty and, therefore, an extremely broad wavelength-angular spectrum for the generated quantum state. Additionally, a large variety of materials, including highly nonlinear ones, become available for use under a relaxed momentum conservation condition. I will report on the first-time generation of photon pairs via spontaneous parametric down conversion from a subwavelength Gallium Selenide film. This result paves the way for future investigations such as engineering quantum optical metasurfaces to enhance the biphoton generation rate.
