Group Seminar via Zoom: Efficient Excitation of an Atom by Single Photons for Quantum Computing Applications

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, we are still holding our group seminars and journal clubs via video conference. This procedure enables us to continue our research, enhance discussions and exchange important information.

Abstract:

The strengthening of light-matter interaction is one of the most fundamental challenges of quantum optics, and the targeted strength is still not achieved. In this direction, deterministic excitation of an atom by single photons is a desired task. To increase the likelihood of the atom-photon interaction, one solution is to make the photon pass through the atom repeatedly which can be done using the high finesse optical cavities. However, in order to solve the drawbacks that come with the optical cavities, free space manipulation of atoms is desirable. Achieving deterministic excitation of an atom in free space decreases the complexity of these setups and allows one to have full control over the system. We engineer the pulse shape, bandwidth, and photon numbers from the SPDC output to achieve near-unity atomic excitations. In this talk, I will be presenting the important results from the previous works on the efficient excitation of single atoms and talk about the experimental progress done by myself.
