Group Seminar via video conference (Zoom)
Tuesday, June 29th, 9.00 am (MEZ)

Dealing with the unique situation of partial lock downs worldwide and home office solutions at our Institute due to the current spreading of the Covid 19 virus, we are now holding our group seminars and journal clubs via video conference.
This procedure enables us to continue our research, enhance discussions and exchange important information.

Abstract:

Future scalable quantum networks, which are essential for large scale quantum communication and distributed quantum computing, will require heralded entanglement between stationary quantum memories over long distances. We demonstrate an elementary quantum network link using individually trapped Rubidium atoms as stationary nodes and photons, transported in optical fiber, to distribute the entanglement. In particular we show how the spatial separation between the quantum memories in our setup can be extended by employing polarization-preserving quantum frequency conversion to lower attenuation losses in the fiber. Furthermore, we present results of a proof-of-principle demonstration of a device-independent quantum key distribution protocol which has been performed with our setup. Lastly, we will discuss how machine-learning online optimization can be employed as an effective tool for operating and improving the experiment. By using Gaussian process regression, this particular optimization scheme allows to develop a statistical model for the underlying problem and therefore is a promising candidate for generalization to different applications.
