Group Seminar via video conference (Zoom)
Tuesday, July 6th, 9.00 am (MEZ)

Dealing with the unique situation of partial lock downs worldwide and home office solutions at our Institute due to the current spreading of the Covid 19 virus, we are now holding our group seminars and journal clubs via video conference.
This procedure enables us to continue our research, enhance discussions and exchange important information.

Abstract:

Passive reference cavities are used for frequency stabilisation and linewidth reduction of lasers. I will talk about some of the challenges arising when working with ultra-high-finesse resonators and present a finesse-measurement technique that does not rely on a stable frequency lock. While passive resonators often require large setups to achieve their excellent stability, fibre cavities offer a highly integrated platform for many different applications that require smaller sizes. I will present our CO2 laser setup for the fabrication of fibres for cavity applications and give an overview of the current work on metal vapour deposition on fibre tips which will enable us to build fibre cavities with integrated electrodes. Moreover, I will talk about our efforts to build non-fibre-based optical resonators with radii of curvature in the mm regime. One of these resonators will be used in a new experiment to probe non-linear interactions with strontium atoms.
