Seminar LMU: The Hall effect and other consequences of artificial gauge fields among ultracold atoms.

Thursday, 30.06.2011 10 a.m. (s.t.) in H107, Fakultät für Physik LMU

Dr. Lindsay LeBlanc, Joint Quantum Institute, NIST, and University of Maryland

Using Raman transitions to couple three ground states of rubidium-87 atoms, we can simulate the effects of a vector potential for ultracold atoms. In addition to demonstrating effective magnetic fields, electric fields, and spin orbit coupling, we study how the transport of a BEC is modified by the presence of the gauge potential and results in a Hall signal. Modifications to the effective mass and interactions between atoms have also been demonstrated.
