Laser Cooling
Quicktime Movie of Laser Cooling in Action

In this film you can see laser cooling in action. Rubidium atoms are first trapped in a magneto-optical trap by using a combination of 6 laser beams and a magnetic quadrupole field. At the end of the film the magnetic field is turned off, and the atoms are cooled in a so called optical molasses, where you can really see how slow the gas is expanding due to its low temperature of around 30 Mikrokelvin !
